Redesigning the Neighborhood

For this final unit of our STEAM class, Urban Planning, we learned more about how urban planning is declining as time and technology advances. We watched several TED talks, and learned about how urban planning should be done, as well as learning more about volume in preparation for our Action Project. For this Action Project, we had to look at an area within a city and redesign it to make it more sustainable and pedestrian-friendly. Below is a slideshow detailing my redesign of the Logan Square Blue Line train stop/bus stop. In conclusion, I thought that this Action Project was pretty difficult. It's surprisingly hard to redesign a space that you see every day, and are used to the way it is. It was additionally a bit difficult to manage my time, given that it's the end of the year, especially with the current events going on right now, but I managed to pull through with it pretty well, I belive.

Solar Savings

In the second unit of our STEAM class, Urban Planning, we learned a lot about how circuits work and the history of electricity. For this Action Project, we were asked to build a simple electrical circuit, and build a circuit cover around it representing an eco-friendly design. We also had to research different energy-efficient devices, and calculate how much energy they would help the homeowner save. Below is a slideshow detailing the process of my project. In conclusion, I thought that this Action Project was actually pretty fun and unique. I quite liked the idea of building our own circuit system and circuit cover for it. It was pretty difficult, however, finding all the information I needed for my eco-friendly devices, and it kind of resulted in a timecrunch for me.

A Deal with Durbin

For this unit of our humanities class, Policy, we learned a lot about the process a bill has to go through before it becomes a complete law, as well as more about the history of the US's legal system. We ended up visiting the City Council on a Field Experience, through a Zoom call, and got to listen in on the proceedings there once more. For this Action Project, we were asked to select a bill or ordinance currently circulating through either our local government or the national government, and write a letter to our corresponding local representative to either vote for or against that bill. Below is the content of the letter that I plan on sending to Senator Durbin. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- WH 1535 N Dayton St, Chicago, IL 60642 7th May, 2020 Richard Durbin 524 Hart Senate Office Building Washington, DC 20510 (202) 224-2854 Dear Senator Durbin, Our world is slowly...

Bridging Connections

For the first unit of our STEAM class this term, Urban Planning, we learned about how bridges and tension functions, as well as Newton's first three Laws of Motion. We went on a digital Field Experience where we had Adam go out and about downtown with his phone out, and talked about architecture we were able to spot while he was walking around. For this Action Project, we had to build our very own bridge out of wooden popsicle sticks and glue, and see if it could hold up a whole gallon of water by itself once finished. In conclusion, I thought that this project was actually pretty fun to hash out. It was interesting, learning about the different support structures and types of bridges that're out there, and how compression and tension work. It could've only really been better if we could have been in school, in person to do the AP together, but that couldn't really be helped.

What is Time?

Pet Time

For the third unit of our STEAM class LST (Light, Sound, and Time), we learned about time and space. We visited the Adler Planetarium to learn more about light, space, and time, and how they're all interconnected and how they affect one another. For this Action Project, we had to make our own design for a new type of clock or time-telling device, and create a short video about it. Initially, my main idea for my time-telling device was a clock that used different colored LED lights  for different hours of the day, with a light in the middle to differentiate AM and PM. Eventually, though, that idea ended up getting scrapped, as it didn't really have anything to connect back to in the past aside from other digital clocks. It also didn't have any real meaning behind it, or any meaningful direction to develop, unlike my final idea for a time-telling device. Below is my recording, detailing my time-telling device Pet Time, what it does, and who it's targeted to. Pe...

Ammendments: Reform or Refrain?

Image
In this second unit of our Humanities Class Argument, Abduction, we learned more about the Constitution of the United States, as well as the Declaration of Independence and the Bill of Rights. Our class went out on a Field Experience to the immigration courts downtown to get a better idea of the process, and we later watched the movie 13th by Ava DuVernay to see how the 13th Amendment to the constitution has impacted African Americans over time. For this Action Project, we had to take a look at our school's student handbook and argue for our own changes to be made to a specific part of it. Below is my argument on how our open campus policy should be changed to allow students more freedom. The Student Handbook describes important information about Global Citizenship Experience Lab School, including information regarding student conduct. While I do agree with the majority of the rules stated in the Handbook, there is a rule that I want to amend regarding the open campus policy. T...
