Giving Back to the Community: La Casa Norte

I volunteer at Casa Norte because I wanted to find an enjoyable way to give back to the neighborhood. La Casa Norte is a Chicago-based homeless shelter that provides food for folks with incomes at or below government averages and live nearby or are an existing client. They do this during their Fresh Market days every Monday. They do this because they want to be able to help the significant number of people in the surrounding neighborhood that are struggling with poverty or homelessness. This organization could not do all of this without volunteers, however. As a volunteer, I help pack and distribute food to people who need it through the Fresh Market system.

I plan on sharing this experience with others through this blog post, and through telling people close to me about the impact Casa Norte has and how it's good for the community. It's a great way to help out people that are in need of help with food, and teaches you a bit about what working in retail is like. I have learned how much food people need to sustain themselves for a month. Not everyone has the liberty or means of going to the grocery store every week to purchase new food, and a lot of people have to make the food they have last for an extended period of time.
