Our House Is On Fire

This Humanities class is called Rhetoric, and during our first unit of this class, we learned about all the different rhetorical devices that go into making a message, including the three main appeals; the ethos (appeal to ethics), logos (appeal to logic), and pathos (appeal to emotion). We also watched the Democratic Primary Debate, and follow along with our certain candidate. I was given Kamala Harris as my candidate. For our Action Project for this unit, we were asked to make a little video speech from the perspective of our candidate from the debates, and answer a question that might be asked to them from their perspective. Below is my video speech.

In conclusion, I thought that this Action Project was enjoyable to make, and an interesting experience to do overall. It was difficult, though, and hard to properly speak from the perspective of the candidate that we were given.

Walls Closing In

This third unit of our Humanities class this term, Rhetoric, was all about investigating the ways rhetoric can work to motivate people to be engaged. The same appeals of ethos, pathos, and logos from our last unit can be used to analyze many forms of art, not just written texts. We went on a Field Experience to Marquette Park to visit the Living Memorial to Martin Luther King and the Chicago Freedom Movement, a piece of public art erected in recognition of the anti-segregation march held there in 1966. While we were there, we met Sadia Nawab, the Director of Arts and Culture at non-profit community organization Inner-City Muslim Action Network (IMAN). She was one of the primary drivers behind the creation and installation of the project. We also explored how artists use their work as a platform to send political messages, and how Cuban art fed Africa's liberation struggles. 12 Hours of Endurance

For this second unit of our Humanities class this term, Endurance, we learned more about modern examples of people that have endured, such as people like David Blaine, who set a world record for the longest time a person could hold their breath underwater, and Laura Dekker, who embarked on a two-year voyage sailing around the world in pursuit of her dream to be the youngest person ever to do so.  For this specific Action Project, we were tasked with deciding on something that we would commit to work on and endure for 12 hours over the span of two weeks. I chose to write out a setting for a Dungeons and Dragons campaign, personally, and see how far I could get with those twelve hours. Building With...Cacti?

For our first unit of our winter STEAM class called Biomimicry, we learned about how to apply nature to human design. For the FE that we went on this unit, we went to a flooring company called Interface, that uses environmentally-friendly carpeting which is inspired by nature. There, we learned about sustainability and a little bit about how to run a business. For this Action Project, we were tasked with researching a plant, then figuring out how we could use that plant's specific attributes and apply them to human design. Below is my slideshow, which is on the Saguaro Cactus. In conclusion, I thought that this project was an interesting idea. I'm proud of my idea that I came up with, although it is quite obscure compared to my original plant inspiration.
